About UMass Amherst
UMass Amherst, the Commonwealth's flagship campus, is a nationally ranked public research university offering a full range of undergraduate, graduate and professional degrees. The University sits on nearly 1,450-acres in the scenic Pioneer Valley of Western Massachusetts, and offers a rich cultural environment in a bucolic setting close to major urban centers. In addition, the University is part of the Five Colleges (including Amherst College, Hampshire College, Mount Holyoke College, and Smith College), which adds to the intellectual energy of the region.
The Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering (MIE) at the University of Massachusetts Amherst invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant Professor level in the field of Robotics.
The successful candidates are expected to teach effectively at the undergraduate and graduate levels, supervise graduate students and postdoctoral fellows, contribute significantly to the advance of science and engineering, as evidenced by scholarly publications, develop and maintain a nationally recognized program of sponsored research, and have an understanding of diversity issues and their educational importance.
Candidates must have an earned doctorate in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or a closely related field at the time of appointment.
Preference will be given to outstanding candidates who have demonstrated research expertise in the field of robotics, especially in the areas of manufacturing and automation. Other areas of robotics will also be considered, including medical and human-robot interaction, particularly if they complement existing strengths at the university.
The Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering has 37 full-time faculty members, over 140 graduate students, and over 800 undergraduates. Research expenditures exceeded $5.45M in the last fiscal year. The Department has a long history of successful interdisciplinary research, including the Mechatronics and Robotics Research Lab, Laboratory for Perceptual Robotics, Autonomous Mobile Robotics Laboratory (AMRL), Arbella Insurance Human Performance Lab, Center for e-Design, and the Wind Energy Center. The emerging thrust areas in manufacturing and bioengineering involve interdisciplinary collaborations between faculty in the Department and faculty in other Departments in the College and around the University, including the Center for Personalized Health Monitoring (CPHM) and the UMass Amherst Institute for Applied Life Sciences (IALS). IALS was recently capitalized with $95 million in investments from the Massachusetts Life Sciences Center and is home to Human Motion Lab with the KUKA Robot Arm, AMTI Force Platforms, and Qualysys Infrared Motion Capture System and the ADDFab (Advanced Digital Design and Fabrication)Lab with an array of cutting-edge, industrial-grade, plastic and metal 3D printers.
