About UMass Amherst – Mount Ida Campus
Located in Newton, adjacent to the Newton-Needham Innovation District, and the tech-focused Route 128 corridor, The Mount Ida Campus of UMass Amherst is the Greater Boston instructional location of the Commonwealth’s flagship campus. At Mount Ida, UMass Amherst offers an array of experiential learning opportunities to its undergraduate students, as well as a growing number of graduate and professional degree programs. The campus is growing its undergraduate career development programs with expanded access to internships and co-ops in the thriving Greater Boston area. Academic programs at the Mount Ida Campus are aligned with the increasing demand for talent in areas such as health care, business, computer science, and other STEM specialties, ensuring the campus will play an important role in filling the talent pipeline that drives the Massachusetts innovation economy.
The Director of Research Business Development will cultivate research collaborations between the College of Information and Computer Sciences (CICS) and individuals, corporations, foundations, and government stakeholders to build large-scale, research-based support for the college. They will drive and communicate research strategies that support the Dean’s objectives and the college’s vision of Computing for the Common Good, and promote the university’s service to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. This individual will be based out of the University’s Mt. Ida campus in Newton, MA. A key function of their role will be to identify opportunities for CICS that leverage the Mt. Ida campus, for example, collaborators or joint research endeavors where the Newton campus is an enabler.
- Develop and implement business development plans which support the strategic goals of the College of Information and Computer Sciences (CICS). Direct strategies to improve research funding college-wide, as well as in specific focus areas of Computer Science and Informatics where growth is desired. Identify and develop new initiatives that are enabled by the Newton campus.
- Marshal college-wide research development efforts. Work closely with the Executive Director of Strategic Partnerships, the Director of External Communications, the Associate Dean of Research & Engagement, the Chair of the Faculty, center/institute Directors, etc. to ensure that we have a unified approach.
- Contribute to a coordinated communications program that effectively articulates the college’s unique mission, vision, value and strategic goals to internal and external audiences.
- Build a strong network by regularly attending industry conferences and events. Build, develop, and maintain relationships with potential partners in the federal government, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, other public sectors, and private industry. Work to strengthen relationships in an effort to develop new program ideas or improve existing programs. Facilitate interactions among faculty, industry scientists, research sponsors, and university administration.
- Identify business development opportunities. Conduct due diligence on potential partners.
- Create and deliver compelling presentations to potential partners.
- Collaborate with the UMass Innovation Institute (UMII) to structure, draft, and negotiate contracts such as sponsored research agreements.
- Evaluate the performance of partnerships against the strategic plan and recommend and/or implement changes to better fit those goals.
- Collaborate with the UMass Office of Research Development to promote and facilitate CICS involvement in large-scale research initiatives, align CICS efforts with existing campus-wide efforts, and share information about relevant and potential partners.
- Performs related duties as assigned or required to meet department, college, or university goals and objectives.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)
Bachelor’s degree in any field (Computer Science, Business Development, or Marketing preferred) with at least 10 years of experience with corporate partnering, business development, or business incubation
Master’s degree in any field (Computer Science, Business Development, or Marketing preferred) with at least 8 years of experience with corporate partnering, business development, or business incubation
- PhD in Computer Science with at least 6 years of experience with corporate partnering, business development, or business incubation.
- Demonstrated expertise and experience with all aspects of the business development process.
- 3 years of experience in a director-level position or higher.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to interact effectively, and create and maintain harmonious relationships with a diverse population of faculty, staff, and on-campus constituents.
- Ability to engage and partner successfully with faculty, administrators, industry partners, public officials, and influential individuals.
- Ability to work well in a highly collaborative environment.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills. Ability to write concisely, express thoughts clearly, and develop ideas in a logical sequence.
- Strong negotiation skills.
- Independent initiative. Must have the ability to stay on task and work productively with a minimum amount of supervision or guidance. Willingness to take on a variety of tasks related to the strategic goals of the college. The ability to adapt and work effectively as the college grows.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail with the ability to complete assignments in a timely manner, balancing the demands of concurrent and potentially competing projects. Ability to pivot quickly to take advantage of strategic opportunities.
- Experience working with senior leadership including corporate executives, philanthropic leaders, and political allies.
- Ability to exercise sound judgment and maintain confidentiality. The ability to think through problems, organize and seek out data/information, identify key factors and underlying causes, and generate solutions.
- Strong computer skills including at least intermediate expertise with:
- Calendar systems such as iCal, Outlook, or Google
- Word processing software such as Microsoft Word or Google Docs
- Spreadsheets such as Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets
- Presentation software such as Microsoft PowerPoint.
- Ability to split workweeks between the University’s Mount Ida and Amherst campuses as needed. We anticipate that approximately 80% of the time will be spent at Mount Ida.
- Ability to work occasional nights and weekends.
- Ability to travel occasionally within the United States.
Preferred Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)
- Familiarity with the field of Computer Science.
- We prefer that at least 3 of the required years of experience be in an academic or higher educational setting.
- Experience working closely with academic leadership.
- Knowledge of Computer Science challenges, opportunities, and trends.
- Knowledge of Massachusetts challenges, opportunities, and constituencies.
- An established network of contacts within the computer science industry.

- Typical office environment
- Ability to travel to other campuses or to locations throughout the United States.
- Monday - Friday, 8:30 am - 5:00pm
- Will be required to work some nights and weekends.
