Job Summary

The Assistant Director of Career Development will help support the College of Information and Computer Sciences' (CICS) mission of helping students discover, explore, and pursue professional experiences that contribute to the common good. This position will coach students throughout their career search. They will learn from, and partner with, the broad CICS community while contributing to strategic initiatives and programming.

Essential Functions

  • Career Advising: Coach students on job/internship search strategy, behavioral and technical interviewing, resume and LinkedIn profiles, general career exploration, applying to graduate school, networking, and offer evaluations.
  • Employer Relations: Engage employers of various sizes and industries to recruit computer science students for internships and jobs; support the Industrial Affiliates Program members with campus recruiting; build relationships with alumni to encourage recruiting and mentoring.
  • Event planning: Support planning and organization of career events including career fairs, employer tech talks, CICS Careers workshops, employer site visits; attend and help lead events; collaborate with student organizations on employer events.
  • Reporting & Analytics: Co-manage the career development software which facilitates and tracks students' job applications, event participation, and advising appointments; contribute to the annual First Destination Survey data collection, analysis and reporting efforts.
  • Strategic Marketing: Promote CICS Careers resources and programming using our career development software, our website, and social media accounts; develop messaging to increase student engagement; create innovative ways to help share student, alumni, and employer success stories.
  • Career Education Resources: Develop highly scalable self-service resources to prepare students throughout the career development lifecycle; assist students with creating personalized career plans; monitor computer science employment trends and implications for graduates.

Other Functions

  • Performs related duties as assigned or required to meet Department, Executive Area/Division, and University goals and objectives.
  • Understands responsibilities with respect to Title IX, Clery and other compliance requirements.
  • Demonstrates capacity, skill and willingness to engage students and contribute to student success.
  • Works collaboratively with other campus stakeholders to fulfill the mission of Student Affairs and Campus Life.

 

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)

  • A Bachelor's degree in a related field of study; 2 years of related experience, preferably in college-level career counseling, advising, education, training, or recruiting.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to interact effectively, and create and maintain harmonious relationships with a diverse population of staff, faculty, students, and off-campus constituents. Ability and willingness to work empathetically with a diverse student population.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills. Ability to write concisely, express thoughts clearly, and develop ideas in a logical sequence.
  • Independent initiative. Must have the ability to stay on task and work productively with a minimum amount of supervision or guidance. Willingness to take on a variety of tasks related to the successful operation of the Career Center. The ability to adapt and work effectively as the College and advising team grows. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail with the ability to complete assignments in a timely manner, balancing the demands of concurrent and potentially competing projects.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and maintain confidentiality. The ability to think through problems, organize and seek out data/information, identify key factors and underlying causes, and generate solutions.
  • Strong computer skills including at least intermediate expertise with
    - Email
    - Calendar systems such as iCal, Outlook, or Google
    - Word processing software such as Microsoft Word or Google Docs
    - Spreadsheets such as Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets
  • Ability to quickly learn and use a variety of technology and tools such as Handshake, Slack, and Trello.
  • Ability and willingness to travel for conferences and special events.

 

Preferred Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)

  • A Master's degree in a related field of study; 1 year of related experience, preferably in college-level career counseling, advising, education, training, or recruiting.
  • Current knowledge of the job market and occupational outcomes for computer science majors.

 

Additional Details

  • Occasional travel required.

 

Work Schedule

  •  Required to work some nights and weekends.
