The University of Massachusetts Donahue Institute (UMDI) Applied Research and Program Evaluation (ARPE) group partners with organizations across multiple sectors to develop and implement utilization-focused studies that address public health, human services, and educational policies and initiatives. Our philosophy reflects a rigorous but practical orientation, believing that research is most meaningful when findings can be applied to public benefit. We also believe that evaluative work is a key driver in advancing equity and strive to utilize culturally responsive and equitable evaluation practices in all of our work. To this end, we are actively working to engage a diverse team of researchers that is reflective of the communities served by the programs we study.
Senior Research Analysts will have proven experience implementing research projects in a professional setting, as well as maintaining positive client relationships. They should be skilled in developing appropriate qualitative and quantitative research methodologies, as well as providing technical supervision to Research Analysts and student Research Assistants assigned to their projects. Typically, Senior Research Analysts work collaboratively under the direction of a Research Manager, Senior Research Manager, and/or the business unit’s Director.
ARPE Senior Research Analysts support the work of their business unit through project management assistance, conducting literature reviews, and implementing data collection and analysis plans. The position may entail significant writing duties and some independent project and task management. Specifics of the role may vary depending on the needs of the project(s) to which they are assigned.
- Actively contribute to conceptualization and development of sound research plans and work plans;
- Monitor progress relative to project work plans and timelines in collaboration with project team members;
- Identify and review necessary background materials such as research articles, secondary data, and program information;
- Actively contribute to the design or acquisition of appropriate data collection instruments;
- Contribute to the development of data collection training protocols and train staff and clients as necessary;
- Coordinate logistical support for primary data collection, including collaborating with clients to ensure timely and accurate data collection;
- Conduct and monitor primary data collection;
- Contribute to the development and maintenance of project databases;
- Conduct and/or oversee data entry and quality assurance protocols;
- Actively contribute to planning for data analysis;
- Conduct required analyses of quantitative and qualitative data consistent with skill set;
- Develop clear visual data summaries such as tables and graphs;
- Develop clear and concise descriptive summaries of data;
- Actively contribute to synthesis of data to identify summary findings;
- Contribute to the development of high quality project deliverables, including written analytical reports;
- Support effective communication with clients;
- Respond to client requests in a positive and proactive manner;
- Work with project leads to provide ongoing project status reports and interim findings to clients as required.
- Assist with training and coordinating the activities of research analysts and student research assistants;
- Provide support in the development of proposals, scopes of work, and effort analyses;
- Share expertise with colleagues within UMDI;
- Participate in business unit and UMDI initiatives;
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)
- Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline: Education, Sociology, Public Health, Public Policy, Psychology or related disciplines, and at least three years of professional research experience.
- Substantive experience using quantitative (SPSS, Stata, R, or SAS) or qualitative data analysis software (NVivo or ATLAS.ti).
- Demonstrated excellent verbal and written communications skills.
- Demonstrated advanced critical thinking and analytical skills.
- Must have the flexibility to travel on an as-needed basis within Massachusetts and occasionally outside of the Commonwealth to attend meetings and conduct field-based data collections.
- Ability to move and transport of supplies up to 20 pounds.
Preferred Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)
- Master’s degree in a relevant discipline: Education, Sociology, Public Health, Public Policy, Psychology or related disciplines, and four years of relevant work experience.
- Proficiency with advanced quantitative analysis methods such as multi-level modeling, time series analysis, item response theory analysis, and propensity score matching/weighting.
- Spanish language proficiency including the ability to effectively conduct business and facilitate data collection activities in Spanish.
Physical Demands/Working Conditions
- Conduct work in an office-based, collegial environment where expectation is to maintain regular communication with supervising manager(s), colleagues, and clients.
- Multiple hours in stationary position, using office equipment and computers, attending meetings, working closely and collaboratively with others.
- Environment is a busy, open office area with multiple interruptions and requests for assistance.
- Must be able to work both independently and in a team setting, and with varying amounts of support, as project assignments may require.
- The physical/mental demands and work environment factors described are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

Standard full time work schedule consisting of five eight-hour days and 40 hours each workweek. Work performed in addition to the regular work hours may be necessary and may require a change in availability at specific times to accommodate for variations in work demands. UMDI offers flexible work arrangements, including hybrid work schedules.
