Job Summary

Reporting to the Executive Director of Foundation Relations, the Associate Director will play a key role in coordinating and carrying out the prospect research and proposal development processes, liaising with faculty members and colleagues across campus to increase foundation support for the University’s academic and campaign priorities. Duties will encompass a range of interrelated activities, including conducting prospect research, working with faculty to develop project budgets, and performing data entry related to prospect management and foundation outreach. As part of a central office that serves the entire campus, Foundation Relations staff must be flexible and willing to assist with a diverse array of activities as needed, demonstrating self-direction, independent thought, and a creative, proactive approach to problem-solving. The Associate Director promotes UMass Amherst priorities and a positive image to constituents and advances the university’s and advancement’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.


Essential Functions

  • Develop working relationships with campus partners, including faculty, and other development professionals to understand funding priorities, and to increase foundation support for the University’s academic and campaign priorities. 
  • Research new and existing foundation sources to support funding priorities and new initiatives. 
  • Create and submit foundation grant proposals and reports, including drafting, and preparing supporting documentation. 
  • Maintain current knowledge of University and school/college/unit opportunities to identify funding sources and prospects for targeted grant and proposal applications. 
  • Manage and track budgets and progress/final reports to foundation donors.  
  • Work closely with faculty in preparing project budgets for their foundation-bound proposals.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • 3 years of relevant experience in a development or similar program.
  • Strong written, oral, and interpersonal communications skills.
  • Facility with technology and either familiarity with or the willingness to learn how to navigate prospect management and similar systems.
  • Ability to analyze and manage competing priorities in a complex environment.
  • Strong service ethic and a deep belief in the mission of a public research university.
  • Demonstrated commitment to valuing diversity and the values articulated in Advancement’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion statement, and contributing to an inclusive working and learning environment.
  • Professional demeanor and an advanced degree of emotional intelligence.


Preferred Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)

  • Experience in an educational institution, or a multi-tiered nonprofit or for-profit organization.
  • Budget development experience.
  • An understanding of institutional philanthropy.
  • Proposal development experience.


Physical Demands/Working Conditions

Typical office environment.


Work Schedule

  • Monday to Friday, 8:30 am to 5:00 pm.
  • Required to work some nights and weekends.
  • This position has the opportunity for a remote work schedule, which is defined by the University as an arrangement where the employee’s work location is to work from a site other than the UMass Amherst campus. As this position falls within the Professional Staff Union, it is subject to the terms and conditions of the Professional Staff Union collective bargaining agreement.
