Job Summary

Reporting to the Director of Education Abroad, the Education Abroad Advisor for Custom Programs is responsible for the administration of international faculty-taught programs. This position coordinates logistical details related to international travel, student applications, health and safety, budget, academic components of IPO’s faculty-taught portfolio, and provides advising support as needed.    


Essential Functions

  • Provides student advising as needed for a portfolio of semester and academic year programs, in the academic and geographical areas assigned.
  • Sustains relationships with domestic International Education Partners (IEPs) to design and implement successful programs to improve student and faculty experiences on new and existing programs.
  • Coordinates risk-management workshops for program faculty with the Director of International Health, Safety, and Security.
  • Consults with UMass and international emergency personnel in case of personal, medical, or political crises during programs.
  • Communicates policies, procedures, and deadlines to faculty and academic units for the sustainable development of overseas programs.
  • Promotes programs digitally and through in-person meetings.
  • Updates required forms, provides application support to students and faculty, and processes applications.
  • Prepares and processes program leader and faculty travel authorizations and reimbursements.


Other Functions

  • Understands responsibilities with respect to Title IX, Clery, and other compliance requirements.
  • Stays informed of best practices for short-term educational abroad programs as maintained by the leading organizations in the study-abroad field.
  • Works collaboratively with UMass Financial Aid, University Without Walls, the Registrar’s Office, and the Controller’s Office to stay informed of University policies and mandates that affect program administration.
  • Performs related duties as assigned or required to meet department, Executive Area/Division and university goals.


Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)

  • Bachelor’s degree and three (3) years of experience working in international higher education.
  • Experience living, studying, or working outside the United States.
  • Familiarity with higher education systems, international education, and study abroad in the United States.
  • Significant experience developing and administering budgets.
  • Proficiency with computer technology including email, collaborative work platforms, and computer software standard to the study abroad industry.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with potential, current, and returned study abroad students, faculty and staff and represent the office as necessary in a professional manner.


Preferred Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)

  • Master’s degree.
  • Proficiency in a foreign language.
  • Web and digital media experience.

  • Typical office environment.

Work Schedule

  • Monday - Friday, 8:30 am – 5:00 pm.
  • Required to work occasional evenings and weekends.
