Job Description

The Department of History in the College of Humanities and Fine Arts at the University of Massachusetts Amherst invites applications for an Assistant Professor in Sub-Saharan African History. We are particularly interested in candidates whose research complements existing strengths in the Department of History, the W.E.B. DuBois Department of Afro-American Studies, and the Five College African Studies Program.

In addition to maintaining an active research agenda, the successful candidate will be expected to teach two courses per semester including the undergraduate survey course on African history since 1500 and other undergraduate and graduate courses related to the successful candidate’s areas of specialization, and to contribute to institutional and professional service.

This is a full-time (9-month), tenure-track position beginning September 1, 2023. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience. Preliminary interviews will be conducted by video conference.

Requirements

Candidates must have a Ph.D. in History or a related field by the date of initial appointment, and must provide evidence of research and teaching excellence, strong commitment to undergraduate and graduate education, and ability to work with diverse populations/students.

We are seeking talented applicants qualified for an assistant professor position. Under exceptional circumstances, highly qualified candidates at other ranks may receive consideration.

Additional Information

The Department of History and the College of Humanities and Fine Arts are committed to sustaining a diverse, inclusive community of faculty, students, and staff with the conviction that such an environment promotes learning and cultivates ethical, informed, and prepared citizens. We are especially interested in qualified candidates whose teaching and service reflect engagement with varied perspectives and constituencies.

Application Instructions

Along with the application, please submit a curriculum vitae, cover letter, writing sample, statement of teaching and advising philosophy, evidence of teaching excellence, diversity statement (see below) and contact information for three (3) professional references who are prepared to provide letters of reference upon request.

The diversity statement should address one's contributions to diversity, equity, and inclusion which identifies past experiences and future goals. These contributions may result from lived experiences, scholarships, and/or mentoring, teaching, and outreach activities.

Applicants should apply by the deadline of November 13, 2022 to ensure full consideration. For questions, contact Garrett Washington, Search Committee Chair, at gwashington@umass.edu.

The University is committed to active recruitment of a diverse faculty and student body. The University of Massachusetts Amherst is an Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity Employer of women, minorities, protected veterans, and individuals with disabilities and encourages applications from these and other protected group members. Because broad diversity is essential to an inclusive climate and critical to the University’s goals of achieving excellence in all areas, we will holistically assess the many qualifications of each applicant and favorably consider an individual’s record working with students and colleagues with broadly diverse perspectives, experiences, and backgrounds in educational, research or other work activities. We will also favorably consider experience overcoming or helping others overcome barriers to an academic career and degree.
