Research funding from industry and government exceeded $21 million in the past year. The college maintains significant research collaborations with more than 50 industry-leading technology companies. Its affiliated research centers include the Center for Intelligent Information Retrieval, the Center for Data Science, the Center for Smart and Connected Society, the Center for Knowledge Communication, the Computational Social Science Institute, and the Cybersecurity Institute. The college offers a world-class education, with 281 PhD students, 396 MS students, and 1732 undergraduate computer science and informatics majors. About the Center for Data Science

The Center for Data Science (CDS) was announced in 2015 as a $100M initiative to expand and coordinate all aspects of computational data science. This includes bringing 16 new tenure-track faculty positions to CICS, creating two new educational programs, establishing an active industry affiliate program, building a 1000+ GPU cluster to support deep learning research, supporting faculty through a postdoctoral fellowship program, running an innovative Data Science for the Common Good summer program, launching a service providing staff data scientists to faculty across campus, and gathering over $50M in outside funding from industry, philanthropy, and government. CDS is agile and administratively light-weight, existing as a thin-walled organization inside CICS, not responsible for tenure track lines, nor administering degree programs.  The Center has over 30 affiliate computer science faculty, and over 200 affiliated faculty across the University and the Five Colleges.
