Job Description

Clinical Instructor for the College of Nursing.  Reporting directly to the Associate Dean, this clinical faculty member will participate in the development, implementation, and evaluation of educational programming in the College of Nursing.  They will work with the College of Nursing faculty and other departments on campus to promote opportunities for inter-professional education.

Individuals will be considered in all areas of clinical expertise and scholarship in nursing, but the department will apply special consideration for those with expertise in Medical Surgical Nursing, Health Assessment, Pediatric Nursing, and Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing.

This position requires a dynamic response to a constantly changing work environment.  Advising and teaching responsibilities frequently compete for priority requiring flexibility and adaptability.  This position requires the abilities of a very qualified educator with broad nursing faculty experience in clinical areas and levels of complexity including substantial expertise in teaching.


Essential Functions

Teach Clinical Courses for the College of Nursing (TEACHING)

  • Teaching the clinical courses necessary each semester during the academic year for both undergraduate and graduate programs.
  • Developing and preparation of course syllabi, learning objectives, assignments, correcting student assignments and providing student feedback for each course that is taught.
  • Teaching in the simulation laboratories as needed.
  • Select learning experiences and guide students in achieving desired outcomes.
  • Participate in the evaluation process of students.
  • Creating teaching materials to be used.
  • Teaching courses within the baccalaureate and graduate programs as needed.
  • Collaborating with other faculty in planning, developing, implementing, and evaluating teaching/learning strategies and curricula [244 CMR 6.04(4)(a)]
  • Recommend new instructional and education research techniques obtained at professional simulation conferences, user groups, and self-development.
  • Faculty guidance and advisement of students.
  • Available to students for advising during 3 posted office hours per week (5 hours during registration periods) and additional hours by appointment.

Provide service for the Achievement of College Goals

  • Participation as an active member of various College committees as well as College Faculty Assembly and annual retreats as well as participation in the systematic evaluation of the undergraduate nursing program (244 CMR 6.04(1)(e)]
  • Assisting with and representing the College at orientation, registration and graduation activities for incoming and graduating students
  • Initiating recommendations for additional resources and changes according to college needs.
  • Participation in the hiring and selection of faculty of the college through attendance at candidate presentations.
  • Participating in prospective nursing student recruitment activities.
  • Participating in the development, recommendation, implementation, and evaluation of academic baccalaureate curriculum policies/procedures and issue resolution [244 CMR 6.04(1)(d)]
  • Engage in activities that advance the mission and goals of the College and University

Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)

  • An earned Master's degree in Nursing required, with an advanced practice certification preferred [244 CMR 6.04(2)(b)(3)];
  • Massachusetts RN license is required by time of appointment and must be maintained in good standing [244 CMR 6.04(2)(b)(1)];
  • National certification as Nurse Educator is preferred.
  • Possess a minimum of two years full-time experience in nursing, or its equivalent, within the last five years and evidence of clinical competence in the area of clinical instruction [244 CMR 6.04(2)(b)(4)];
  • Experience as nursing faculty including teaching in a clinical and skills laboratory environment is preferred within the past 2-3 years.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to maintain clinical nursing practice and academic expertise appropriate to teaching responsibilities [244 CMR 6.04(2)(b)(5)]
  • Ability to communicate effectively with undergraduate/graduate students, faculty and staff both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to work as part of a team.
  • Ability to use an online teaching platform and basic IT applications.
  • Good organizational skills.
  • Ability to meet deadlines.


 Work Schedule

May include some nights and weekends.  Office space will be available in our Amherst location.  Office accommodation and laptop will be provided.


Salary Information

Salary commensurate with education, experience, and certifications will be provided.

Travel to clinical sites outside of the normal work schedule is reimbursable but commuting travel on regular workdays is not an expense reimbursable by the University.  Parking at a secondary office location is reimbursable if an annual parking pass is purchased for the first location.


Additional Information

  • This appointment will initially include a teaching assignment of up to 75% effort, along with 25% service.
  • Must maintain professional development annually.
  • Participation in the Annual Faculty Reporting process is required.
  • The steps of the process are as follows:
    • A minimally qualified pool is identified from the applicants, ideally by the end of February 2023.
    • All remaining candidates are evaluated, and a “long list” is identified, which will be interviewed via video conference. Candidates invited to these interviews will be emailed at least one week before the scheduled date.
    • For candidates advancing to the long list: references will be contacted, and candidates will have an opportunity to submit 1 or 2 representative scholarly works.
    • A “shortlist” is developed from the long list, and these candidates will be invited to interview on campus.

  • A current curriculum vitae. The CV should be ordered as follows: 1) education, 2) employment, 3) awards and honors, 4) sponsored research (if any), 5) peer-reviewed publications, 6) service, and 7) other sections as considered appropriate by the candidate.
  • Contact information, (name, title, email address, institution) for three (3) professional references. References will not be contacted until the second phase of the search.
