Job Description
The Journalism Department at the University of Massachusetts Amherst is accepting applications for a full-time (9-month) non-tenure track Lecturer in Public Relations. The selected candidate will be responsible for teaching three course sections per semester and will be a core member of the Department's rapidly growing public relations concentration. They would be expected to teach core courses within the concentration, such as Introduction to Public Relations and Writing for Public Relations.
Candidates with an industry background in public relations are especially encouraged to apply, and we welcome candidates with expertise or experience in a range of subareas. The selected candidate will be able to work closely with the concentration's Program Director to develop forward-thinking courses that help prepare students for various organizational, agency, nonprofit, and government settings. They would also be expected to help students identify internship opportunities and help supervise their internships. Our public relations concentration has grown robustly since being established three years ago, and we have a highly active, student-led Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) chapter that the selected candidate would be expected to help advise. We welcome applications from candidates who can contribute to our goal of providing an education that reflects and is responsive to our entire student body and the diverse industries they seek to become leaders in.
The position will begin on Sept. 1, 2024. The initial appointment is for one academic year, with anticipated reappointments for the first four years and the possibility of continuing reappointment under union-bargained guidelines. All reappointments are contingent upon funding availability and satisfactory performance. There is a possibility for a January 17, 2024, start date if the selected candidate wishes to start earlier.
Requirements
Applicants must have at least a Master's degree, and candidates with a Ph.D. are welcome to apply. Teaching experience in public relations at the undergraduate level or superlative professional experience is preferred.
