Job Summary

Postdoctoral Research Associate will perform research in nuclear and particle physics at the Jefferson Laboratory (JLab) in Newport News, VA. Help in the planning, simulation, and running of experiments at JLab. Analyze experimental data, and write scientific papers. Lead or assist in the preparation of new physics proposals. Assist in the supervision and advising of graduate students and undergraduate students working on JLab projects. 


Essential Functions

  • Analyze data from experiments at JLab.
  • Run computer simulations to predict detector response and acceptance for these experiments.
  • Write scientific papers.
  • Prepare new scientific proposals for collaboration review, and for submission to the JLab. Program Advisory Committee.
  • Assist in supervising and advising graduate students and undergraduates working on JLab projects.


Other Functions

  • Work collaboratively and effectively to promote teamwork, diversity, equality and inclusiveness.
  • Work in partnership with colleagues within the CNS community and across the campus to support the Dean's strategic priorities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned in support of the mission and goals of the College of Natural Sciences.


Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)

  • PhD degree in experimental nuclear or particle physics.


Preferred Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)

  • Expertise with the ROOT analysis environment, and programming in C++ and Python.
  • Experience with neural net development for particle identification, for example, electron, muon, pion identification.  
  • Experience with electromagnetic calorimeters, drift chambers and multi-wire proportional counters.
  • Experience with running GEANT simulations to predict detector response and experimental acceptance.


Physical Demands/Working Conditions

  • There are no specific physical demands.
  • This position will be 100% based at Jefferson Lab, and the successful applicant should anticipate moving to the Newport News, VA area.


Work Schedule

  • Monday-Friday, 9:00am- 5:00pm.


Salary Information

  • $65,000/Annually
