Job Summary

Under the direct supervision of the Associate Provost for Academic Programs on the Mount Ida Campus (MIC), the Associate Director of Mount Ida Campus Career Center leads and manages all career services, initiatives, programs, and activities at the Mount Ida Campus designed to support the career development and professional success of UMass Amherst graduate and undergraduate students. The Associate Director works collaboratively with the Associate Provost for Career and Professional Development, Amherst Career Hub staff, Amherst Career Center Directors, faculty, alumni, and employers to create opportunities for career exploration, internships, and employment.

 

Essential Functions

  • In collaboration with the Associate Provost for Academic Programs at Mount Ida Campus, develops and implements a strategic vision for the MIC Career Center that aligns with the goals and mission of the Mount Ida Campus (MIC) and the broader University.
  • Collaborates with the Associate Provost for Academic Programs at Mount Ida Campus and the Amherst Campus Career Centers to coordinate and expand MIC partnerships with Boston-area employers, alumni, and industry professionals to develop internship opportunities, job pathways, and networking opportunities.
  • Develops and executes events such as internship and career fairs, alumni and employer panels, and resume-building workshops.
  • Oversees the development and delivery of career counseling services, workshops, and programs that address students’ career exploration, job search strategies, and professional development.
  • Provides individual career coaching and advising to students and alumni, addressing their unique career goals and challenges.
  • Hires, trains, supervises, and mentors Career Center student workers.
  • Collaborates with Associate Provost for Academic Programs on the MIC, Student Affairs and Campus Life staff, and Academic Program Directors to develop and implement co-curricular programming and events to enhance academic programs and student engagement such as panels, workshops, events, and activities.
  • With Associate Provost for Academic Programs and the Associate Provost for Career and Professional Development, develops a Professional Development course that will fulfill the UMass Integrative Experience general education requirement, including providing students with the opportunity to practice learning objectives and build career competencies through an internship experience and to reflect on and integrate their experience with their broad exposure to previous courses both within and outside of their major.
  • Teaches professional development courses at MIC and supports additional career related courses and course needs at MIC.
  • Implements and assesses innovative and equitable approaches to career services that support all students, including underrepresented and non-traditional students.
  • Develops and executes communication plans to promote Career Center programs, services, and resources to students, faculty, and external stakeholders.
  • Collaborates with the Director of Mount Ida Campus Engagement to participate in Amherst-area recruitment activities, including MIC Information Sessions, Internship and Career Fairs, classroom presentations, and other activities and events promoting the overall MIC student experience, including occasional evening and weekend events.
  • Collects and analyzes data and generates reports to evaluate the effectiveness of career services programs and initiatives and uses feedback to continuously improve and adapt career services strategies and offerings.
  • Represents the Career Center and the Mount Ida Campus in meetings and on committees, advocating for career services and student needs.

 

Other Functions

  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Attends trainings and meetings for professional development and responsibilities.  

 

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)

  • Bachelor’s degree (preferably in Higher Education Administration, Student Affairs, Counseling, Human Resources, or related field) and five (5) years of experience in education/career development/counseling. A Master’s degree (preferably in Higher Education Administration, Student Affairs, Counseling, Human Resources, or related field) may be substituted for two (2) years of experience. 
  • Demonstrated ability to manage a high volume of complex and varied stakeholder needs.
  • Commitment to fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion in all aspects of position. 
  • Working knowledge of career advising practices and student success indicators.
  • Ability to collaborate and interact with faculty, staff, students, and parents in a friendly and professional manner.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently to organize multiple tasks and set priorities for action, in a fast-paced office environment.
  • Experience working with students with a range of academic abilities. 
  • Computer proficiency with word processing, spreadsheet, and database programs.
  • Skill in small group presentations.
  • Available to work on occasional nights and weekends.
  • Flexibility to work with initiative and willingness to take on a variety of tasks related to the successful operation and administration of the unit. 
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure and varying situations with independence, competent judgment and discretion.
  • Strong understanding of student confidentiality and ability to understand and implement Title IX and FERPA guidelines.

 

Preferred Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)

  • Knowledge of university academic rules and regulations.

 

Physical Demands/Working Conditions

  • Typical office environment.
  • This position will require occasional travel to the Amherst campus for events.

  • Please note that this position is on-site at the Mount Ida Campus of UMass Amherst in Newton, MA. 

 

Work Schedule

  • Monday - Friday, 8:30am - 5:00pm. 
  • Required to work occasional nights and weekends as programmatic needs dictate.

Salary Level 27
