Job Summary
Under general direction, the Coordinator for Group Fitness position develops and manages comprehensive group fitness and small group training programs.
Essential Functions
- Recruits, hires, trains, schedules, supervises, evaluates, 50-80 student staff members hired as group fitness and small group training staff.
- Provides leadership for student staff by providing continuous education for staff to enhance skills and obtain/maintain appropriate certifications through workshops, instructional seminars, and conference attendance.
- Develops, leads, coordinates, promotes, and evaluates a comprehensive group fitness program and a small group training program for the UMass community.
- Assesses current activities, and research industry trends to compile and deliver a diverse array of offerings to best meet participant needs.
- Oversees class/session schedules, monitors, and maintains registration processes and responds to participant inquiries.
- Supports Wellbeing Education and Services staff in delivering related educational outreach.
- Coordinates and evaluates a comprehensive program of group fitness equipment maintenance, including preventative maintenance and repair. Evaluates and recommends group fitness and small group training equipment for purchase, repair parts, materials, and supplies required to meet program and facility needs.
- Coordinates the development and implementation of policies, procedures, and guidelines, including potential risks associated with group fitness and small group training programs; coordinates the development of learning outcomes for associated participants and student employees; and research liability issues, and assists with implementation of updates to policies and procedures to maintain appropriate standard of care and safety.
- Assists in the development and administration of budget for assigned area.
- Participates in strategic planning and related RecWell goal setting and assessments. Regularly reports assessment and statistical data pertaining to operations, participation, and staff development.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)
- Bachelor’s degree with two (2) years of fitness experience in a recreation program, OR Master’s degree with one (1) year of related experience.
- Ability to demonstrate effective customer service skills, including but not limited to strong verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to establish and maintain effective, positive, and collaborative working relationships.
- Ability to prepare and monitor budget information, including make purchasing decisions based on best practices, independent research, and judgement.
- Ability to plan and prepare presentations/trainings on strength & conditioning, and physiology principles to diverse populations.
- Ability to prioritize and organize work assignments.
- Ability to train and supervise student employees.
- Knowledge and ability to interpret industry standards related to safety of participants in fitness and strength training setting, as a risk manager.
Preferred Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)
- First Aid/CPR/AED instructor certification.
- Current Personal Training Certification through NSCA, ACE, NASM, AFAA, or other nationally recognized agency.
Physical Demands/Working Conditions
- Typical office and Recreation Center environment.
Work Schedule
- 37.5 hour per week position; must be available to work evenings and weekends.
