Job Description

The Department of Earth, Geographic, and Climate Sciences at the University of Massachusetts Amherst invites applications for a full-time, temporary (one year), academic-year Lecturer with a strong commitment to geology-focused pedagogy and undergraduate education to begin on September 1, 2025.

The position requires teaching two to three courses per semester including: Earth Materials (Fall) and Petrology (Spring) and other courses, such as Structural Geology,  Geologic Mapping and  large-enrollment introductory Geology courses. Many of these courses have lab sections and  take advantage of nearby New England geology for lab and weekend field trips. The successful applicant will also demonstrate commitment to participation in additional instructional activities such as undergraduate experiential learning through supervision of independent studies, contributions to co-taught courses, or engagement with student activities and events across the Five Colleges Geology program. While this position is focused on undergraduate teaching and mentorship, the successful applicant is also welcome to participate in graduate education through journal-club seminar(s). Applicants are expected to work collaboratively and effectively to promote teamwork, diversity, equity and inclusiveness.
 

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)

  • Master’s degree in Geology or a related fields (such as Geosciences, Environmental Science, or Oceanography).

Preferred Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)

  • PhD in geology or a related field.
  • Past experience as the primary instructor or teaching assistant in undergraduate courses in geology or related fields is required. 
  • Demonstrated skills in designing inclusive, accessible, and equitable courses.

 

Work Schedule

  • Typical faculty work schedule. Some courses include weekend field trips to some of the many sites of geologic interest in the northeast that support student learning.

 

Additional Information

  • This is a full-time, temporary (one year), academic-year Lecturer position.

 

Salary Information

  • Salary will be commensurate with skills and experience.
