Job Summary

Under the general direction of the Assistant Director, Academic Safety, the Hazardous Materials Tracking Manager manages the University’s chemical, biological and radiological inventory management program, which includes responsibility for the oversight and maintenance of the online database system, receipt, tracking and delivery of hazardous materials and safety supplies for academic areas, and coordination of removal of hazardous materials from academic areas with academic departments and Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S). The position also supervises other personnel involved in the hazardous materials management program.


Essential Functions

  • Manage the hazardous materials inventory program, which includes the receipt, tracking and delivery of hazardous materials to academic areas and laboratories and associated database.
  • Maintain inventory of safety supplies and distribute to academic areas.
  • Ensure hazardous material inventory is accurate and up-to-date by coordinating audits of hazardous materials in academic areas and that areas are appropriately labeled with hazards present for emergency response.
  • Develop and document procedures for the hazardous materials management program.
  • Train and oversee hazardous materials management program staff and students on proper program procedures, including safe hazardous material handling procedures, Department of Transportation (DOT) requirements, identification of hazards, emergency procedures and other related information to ensure efficient program operation, safety and compliance.
  • Coordinate removal of hazardous materials from academic departments and EH&S as part of laboratory clean outs.
  • Ensure equipment necessary to support the program, such as bar-code scanners, iPads, computers, vehicles, etc., are available and operational.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for the database platform provider and work with campus stakeholders, including Information Technology and Unified Procurement Services Team (UPST), to ensure compliance and efficient operations.
  • Provide training to the academic community on use of the database platform and related topics.
  • Serve as a resource and liaison to the campus community and refer inquiries not directly related to the hazardous materials inventory program to appropriate EH&S colleagues.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)

  • Master’s Degree, preferably in Chemistry or related field, with one year of experience in a related field such as inventory management, retail management, database management, lab management, etc. or Bachelor’s Degree, preferably in Chemistry or related field, with two years of experience in a related field such as inventory management, retail management, database management, lab management, etc. 
  • Has, or able to immediately obtain, DOT certification for hazardous materials.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent communication skills.

  • Typical Office Environment Activity.


Work Schedule

  • Monday – Friday, 8:30 am – 5:00 pm.
  • Some night and weekend hours may be required.
