Under the general direction of the Associate Director for Programs and Student Development, the Senior Assistant Director for Fitness leads Fitness Operations, including planning and supervising the Group Fitness and Personal Training programs. Designs, implements, and evaluates new fitness related programming and initiatives; work with Campus Recreation colleagues to manage a comprehensive collegiate recreation program, and assist with the selection and delivery of recreation activities and student employment practices that contribute to student success and well being.
- Develop and implement policies, procedures, and guidelines for fitness programs and fitness operations. Assist in the development of policies and guidelines regarding Campus Recreation and well being programs. Develops learning outcomes for associated participants and student employees
- Provide leadership for department staff. Implement continuing education strategies for staff and student staff to enhance skills; including, but not limited to: one-on-one meetings, training, functional unit meetings, workshops, certifications, and conference attendance.
- Coordinate, supervise, and evaluate a comprehensive maintenance program, including preventative maintenance and repair for fitness equipment. Evaluate and purchase equipment for purchase, repair parts, materials and supplies to meet program and facility needs
- Serve as risk manager for fitness programs and fitness operations. Research liability issues and risks related to fitness programming and operations and updates to policies and procedures to best ensure an appropriate standard of care and safety of fitness programs, fitness operations, and related equipment
- Develop and administer budget for assigned area. Regularly reports assessment and statistical data pertaining to operations, program participation, and staff development
- Performs related duties, as assigned or required, to meet Department, Executive Area/Division, and University goals and objectives

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)
- Bachelor’s degree in Recreation Management, Kinesiology, Public Health, Student Affairs, Higher Education, or related field with five (5) years of collegiate recreation experience, including three (3) years post Bachelor’s degree; or Master’s degree in Recreation Management, Kinesiology, Public Health, Student Affairs, Higher Education, or related field, with three (3) years collegiate recreation experience, including 2 years post Master’s degree
- Current Personal Training Certificate through NSCA, ACE, NASM, AFAA, or other nationally recognized agency; or current Group Fitness Certification through ACE, NASM, AFAA, or other nationally recognized agency
- CPR Teaching certification within six (6) months of employment
- Ability to demonstrate effective customer service skills, including but not limited to, communicating effectively verbally and in writing
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships
- Ability to prepare and monitor budget information, including purchasing decisions based on independent research and judgment
- Ability to plan and prepare presentations/trainings on strength, conditioning and physiology principles to diverse populations
- Ability to prioritize and organize work assignments
- Ability to train and supervise student employees
- Knowledge and ability to interpret industry standards related to risk management and safety of participants in fitness and strength training setting
- Work some nights and weekends as requested
Preferred Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)
- 3 years post-Master’s degree experience in a collegiate recreation fitness program
- Training, evaluation, assessment, and management of a comprehensive fitness program
- Current CPR teaching certification
