About the Manning College of Information and Computer Sciences
Established in 2015, the Manning College of Information and Computer Sciences (CICS) is home to a U.S. News & World Report top twenty-five ranked computer science graduate program and a top-thirty ranked undergraduate program. Today, CICS has 74 faculty, including 40 faculty hired in the past five years. Research funding from industry and government exceeded $21 million in the past year. The college maintains significant research collaborations with more than 50 industry-leading technology companies. Its affiliated research centers include the Center for Intelligent Information Retrieval, the Center for Data Science, the Center for Smart and Connected Society, the Center for Knowledge Communication, the Computational Social Science Institute, and the Cybersecurity Institute. The college offers a world-class education, with 281 PhD students, 396 MS students, and 1732 undergraduate computer science and informatics majors. The Manning College of Information and Computer Sciences (CICS) at the University of Massachusetts is looking for exceptional teachers in both informatics and computer science to join our growing Teaching Faculty. Our programs are growing, so we are currently looking to fill multiple openings. We encourage applications in all areas of informatics and computer science, but are particularly interested in faculty who can teach courses in computer systems, software engineering, data science, and health informatics. We are looking for individuals with a commitment to teaching, who are willing to work collaboratively with our other faculty in the teaching and tenure tracks to develop and continuously refine our curricula. It is expected that the person holding this position will remain with the college long-term.
As part of a public, land-grant institution, CICS is dedicated toward “Computing for the Common Good.” Given our continually growing and increasingly diverse student body, we encourage applications from women, people of color, members of the LGBTQ community, and individuals with a commitment to mentoring historically marginalized demographics in computer science.
Initial appointments will be for at least one year at the rank of Lecturer, though highly qualified candidates may receive consideration for these openings at other ranks (Senior Lecturer or Senior Lecturer II). Lecturers may be promoted to Senior Lecturer or Senior Lecturer II after sufficient time in service, meritorious performance, and promise of continuing professional development and achievement. After four years of full-time equivalent service, teaching faculty are also eligible for a continuous appointment. This is an academic-year appointment with teaching responsibilities for 9 months of the year. Full-time teaching faculty typically teach five courses per year at the undergraduate or graduate level and have service obligations. Part-time teaching faculty will be assigned a proportional workload and may teach classes at either the undergraduate or graduate levels. Opportunities for teaching additional summer courses may be available for additional compensation. There are no required research-related duties, although research activities and prior research record are highly valued.
Before starting in this position, applicants must hold an MS or PhD in Computer Science or a closely related field, with a PhD strongly preferred. Applicants must also have a strong commitment to, and proven track record of, teaching undergraduate and/or graduate courses in the information and computer sciences.
Starting Date: September 1, 2023. Other start dates (e.g., Spring 2024 or Fall 2024) may be considered.
