Job Summary

Under the direction of the Mount Ida Campus Director, and functional supervision by Auxiliary Enterprises in Amherst, the Director of Dining and Hospitality Services, Mount Ida campus, provides the professional management of Mount Ida dining, board and retail operations, catering and conference services, which includes alcoholic beverage sales and services in accordance with university policy. The Director of Dining and Hospitality Services is responsible for marketing, operations, and financial management of three major areas.


Essential Functions

  • Provides leadership and supervises staff; engages in the operational planning, development, and delivery of services in all aspects of UMass Mount Ida residential and retail dining including marketing and promotions, food and beverage quality, performance, and “no error” in service delivery; responsible for Mount Ida event coordination with Amherst conference services on intake and for Mount Ida staff on event execution; acts as the event customer’s main point of contact.
  • Prepares an annual budget and administers that budget in a fiscally responsible manner; monitors the daily financial status of all assigned areas; recognizes and acts to remediate variations from projected goals; uses key performance indicators to measure the business weekly; works closely with the Director, Dining UMass Amherst, to prepare monthly forecasts and departmental budgets, ensuring accuracy and achievement; develops annual business and marketing plans for the department in conjunction with the Director of Marketing; institutes and maintains policies and procedures necessary to determine labor costs and a profitable product; completes a contribution analysis and product mix study yearly.
  • Establishes and maintains a positive rapport with clients, prior to, during, and post event, exceeding client expectations and encouraging repeat business; plays an active role in the local community through associations, memberships, and involvement; acts as an ambassador of the catering department within the local community; maintains formal and informal communications with customers through comment cards, electronic surveys, catering open houses, year-in-review, and customer focus groups.
  • Oversees all personnel actions related to interviewing, hiring, training, and evaluating all direct and indirectly supervised personnel; establishes and maintains performance goals that are consistent with the mission and objectives of the university; coordinates training for employees to ensure the opportunity for growth and success in their current roles and future careers.
  • Supervises all food preparations and service to include delivery, storage, rotation, and proper use of all foodstuffs, including bakeshop operations, equipment and ware washing chemicals according to university policies; oversees the logistics and coordination of products, menus, and inventory; inspects the facilities as needed; ensures clean and sanitary operations.
  • Creates staff schedules and manages special functions that fall within the guidelines of Mount Ida dining services; participates and/or leads meetings with the sales department, facilities, and any department that might intersect with catering and event operations.
  • Oversees alcoholic beverage services and manages risk liability by ensuring strict compliance with Massachusetts State Liquor Laws and campus beverage policies.
  • Pursues innovative methods to grow event business on the Mount Ida campus.
  • Performs other food and beverage activities and duties within dining services as requested.


Other Functions

  • Participates in sensitive employee-related matters, such as conducting disciplinary hearings, and acts as a grievance hearing officer and/or participates in Labor Relations discussions with decision-making authority for Mount Ida Dining Services; uses access to sensitive and/or not yet public university-related information only in the performance or within the responsibilities of the position and exercises care to prevent unnecessary disclosure to others.
  • Participates in programs of quality assurance, peer review, and continuing education.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)

  • Bachelor's degree (may substitute 10 years of relevant experience for Bachelor's degree) with five years of relevant experience.
  • ServSafe certification required or must be obtained within 3 months of hire.
  • Alcohol Serving certification required or must be obtained within 3 months of hire.
  • Valid driver’s Class D license.
  • Ability to navigate a high pressure, demanding work environment.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to work nights, weekends, holidays, and be on call for emergencies. 


Preferred Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)

  • Experience in the hospitality, catering, or hotel industry.
  • Experience using Amadeus catering software.
  • Experience in working in a unionized environment.

  • Average number of student employees supervised at any given time:  5-15
