UMass Amherst, in partnership with University of California Davis Professors Vladimer Filkov and Seth Frey, have been awarded two grants from the National Science Foundation’s (NSF) Growing Convergence Research program, with a project entitled “Jumpstarting Successful Open-Source Software Projects with Evidence-based Rules and Structures.”  This project will discern the socio-technical structural and governance conditions under which Internet-based Open-Source Software (OSS) projects are most (and least) effective, and provide actionable knowledge to OSS developers and to the nonprofit organizations that support them.
Apprentice I (Plumber) UMass Amherst
Plumbing Apprentices (Apprentices I through IV) perform project work commensurate with training and experience at the appropriate level to acquire practical experience in the skills of the plumbing trade; attend assigned classes to acquire training, instruction, and information related to the appropriate level; and perform related work as required. Apprentice I is the entry-level trade job in the series. With supervisory guidance, plumbing Apprentices install, repair, maintain, and/or alter sanitary fixtures, heating units, etc., and perform related work as required. The basic purpose of the work is to install, repair, maintain, and/or alter steam, heating, water supply, drainage, and disposal systems or as code requires By the end of the Apprenticeship cycle (stages I – IV), Apprentice will be able to meet all the minimum qualifications of the then current Form 30 for Plumber. This position is open only to Physical Plant employees, with first preference given to Custodial and Grounds employees covered by the AFSCME collective bargaining agreement.
