Job Summary
The Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering at the University of Massachusetts Amherst is seeking talented applicants qualified for tenure-track assistant professor position. Under exceptional circumstances, highly qualified candidates at other ranks may receive consideration. The appointment is expected to begin September 1, 2027. The position is defined broadly in remote sensing systems and technologies across the entire electromagnetic spectrum. Scholars working across disciplines are particularly encouraged. Specific areas of interest include but are not limited to: microwave and optical, active and passive instruments or systems and their application to the remote sensing of land, water, or the atmosphere. Payloads and instrument concepts for small satellites or other resource-constrained platforms such as UAVs are of particular interest. We are committed to expanding the scope of our department beyond our traditional strengths.

Essential Functions
The candidate is expected to develop an externally-funded research program in environmental remote sensing and to develop and maintain an internationally recognized scholarly presence.
The candidate is expected to contribute to teaching existing graduate and undergraduate courses in Electrical & Computer Engineering for example in electronics, signal processing, or electromagnetics, and will be encouraged to develop creative new curricula in the area of their expertise.
The candidate is also expected to contribute meaningful service to their department, College, University and externally within their field through participation in committees, faculty governance, and activities that support the academic community.

Applicants must have a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering or a closely related field or anticipate such a degree by September 1, 2027.

The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering has 38 full-time, tenure track faculty members and approximately 250 graduate students and 850 undergraduates. Work is performed in a standard office or indoor university environment and involves minimal physical exertion.

Salary Information
The University expects to pay within an approximate range between $79,350 and $137,344 for this position. Please note:
The low-end of the pay range in all faculty searches at the University of Massachusetts Amherst is the minimum salary for the rank included in the collective bargaining agreement between the University and the Massachusetts Society of Professors, UMass Amherst/MTA/NEA. Engineering TT starting salaries are typically well above this minimum.
The high-end of the pay range reflects the 75th percentile for the department/discipline based on established, disciplinary-specific faculty compensation surveys.
The specific pay for this position will be determined by the University based on consideration of all relevant factors, including faculty rank and required or relevant certifications, when and if it decides to extend an offer of employment.

Process
The steps of the process are as follows:
A minimally qualified pool is identified from the applicants in early December, 2026.
All remaining candidates are evaluated and a “long list” is identified, which will be interviewed via video conference. Candidates invited to these interviews will be emailed at least one week before the scheduled date.
For candidates advancing to the short list stage: references will be requested in January 2027.
A “shortlist” is developed from the long list, and these candidates will be invited to interview on campus. On-campus interviews are anticipated in late February.
This position will remain open for the time period required by any applicable collective bargaining agreement and will continue until a suitable candidate pool is identified. Interested applicants are strongly encouraged to apply early.
