Waterfront Recreation Program Manager

UMass Boston Division of Marine Operations is seeking a leader to manage our Waterfront Recreation Program at the new Fox Point Dock. We are re-starting our storied Waterfront Recreation Program this season offering Kayaks, Stand-up Paddleboard (SUP) and limited Sailing for student, faculty/staff and the community.  The ideal candidate is organized, self-motivated, team oriented and adaptable. In addition, he/she must possess strong communication and interpersonal skills, as well as exhibit a mature and professional demeanor. The manager should be customer focused and comfortable speaking with students, staff and community members.

Responsibilities:

  • Open and close the site: approximately11AM – sunset during shoulder season of June and October on Sat and Sun; 11AM-sunset weekdays Wed though Sun during high season.
  • Provide clear, effective, and timely communication with staff.
  • Manage a team of up to 6 employees.
  • Assist with lesson scheduling and oversight.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization at our public access dock and quarterbarge.
  • Lead all staff and participants through our established emergency management procedure in the event emergencies occur.
  • Monitor weather and make decisions regarding inclement weather in cooperation with leadership staff.
  • Approve daily float plans, and as needed, discuss ways to execute their plans effectively or safely.
  • Assist the public with kayak, rowboat, sailboat, and paddleboard rental.
  • Exercise sound judgment and decision-making.
  • Build rapport with students, faculty/staff and community members.
  • Able to communicate clearly, directly, and calmly always.

Qualifications:

  • Experience operating a powerboat, US Powerboat Safe Handling certification or MA Environmental Police preferred but not required.
  • Current US Sailing Level 1 Certification (or willing to obtain; may be eligible for reimbursement).
  • Current First Aid and Adult/Child CPR certification or ability to obtain.
  • Minimum 2 years sailing instructor experience.
  • Excellent organization and time-management skills.
  • Able to work effectively with a wide variety of age groups and populations from diverse backgrounds, role modeling inclusive behavior and building positive group culture.
  • Comfortable giving and receiving feedback to and from peers, participants, and supervisors.
  • Able to build rapport easily with participants and co-workers.
  • Comfortable working outdoors, regardless of weather.
  • Positive and enthusiastic attitude.
  • Strong computer skills and comfortable learning online tools and software.
  • Ideal candidates will have a high level of comfort around the water.

Compensation:

The pay range for this position is $28 - $30 per hour depending on experience and relevant certifications.

Schedule: 

Full-time hours available seasonally from May through October. Weekend availability is required. Work weeks are 11AM – sunset during shoulder season of June and October on Sat and Sun.  11AM – sunset Wed through Sunday in season.  Available to start by May 1st is preferred. Expected schedule is 40 hours/week.
