Job Summary

The Cornelison Group - Biomedical Engineering Department at UMass Amherst - studies fluid dynamics and biomechanics in the context of spinal cord injury. This research fellow will lead a supervised research project in collaboration with current students and staff. Research activities include aseptic surgical techniques, intravital imaging, and rodent husbandry and post-operative care in a model of spinal cord injury. Essential Functions

Examples of duties:

  • Perform research in the areas of neuroscience, fluid mechanics, and neural tissue engineering.
  • Contribute to data collection, analysis, and write ups/papers on completed research in cooperation with professorial supervisor.
  • Participate in group meetings and journal clubs.
  • Interact collegially with others in the laboratory, the Department, and elsewhere at the University.
  • Collaborate actively with lab members.

Other functions:

  • Work collaboratively and effectively to promote teamwork, diversity, equality and inclusiveness.
  • Perform other duties as assigned in support of the mission and goals of the laboratory.

 

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)

  • B.S. Degree in Biomedical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Neuroscience, or other closely related field.
  • Experience or interest in learning intravital imaging, image analysis, rodent handling and husbandry, and aseptic surgical techniques.
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to follow protocols.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills, including critical and analytical thinking.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to thrive in a multidisciplinary, collaborative environment.

 

Preferred Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)

  • Prior experience with surgical techniques and/or husbandry in rats strongly preferred.

 

Physical Demands/Working Conditions

Ability to work in a lab environment.

 

Work Schedule

20-40 hours per week – flexible schedule.

 

Salary Information

Salary will be commensurate with experience.

 

Additional Details

  • Professorial supervisor with allowance for considerable professional freedom.
  • May help mentor students.
