Job Summary

The HVAC Mechanic Apprentice (Apprentices I, II and III) performs project work commensurate with training and experience at the appropriate level to acquire practical experience in the skills of installing, maintaining, and repairing mechanical systems and system components. This includes, but is not limited to, cooling tower, strainers, pumps, air handlers, exhaust systems, fume hoods, etc. 

With supervisory guidance, responsibilities include maintaining mechanical system, applying appropriate skills and methods as necessary in the areas of HVAC maintenance and repair, pump maintenance and repair, and air compressors and their related equipment. The Apprentice also attends classroom training during work hours to complete requirements for a series of different licensures over the course of three years. Apprentice I is the entry-level job in the series.

May assist other employees in the performance of their work.  Performs related work as required.


Essential Functions

All duties and responsibilities are subject to the completion of necessary training, acquiring the necessary licensures and under the direction of a Supervisor.

  • With supervisory guidance, learns to maintain buildings and systems utilizing skills, methods, and tools of the trade to repair HVAC systems, pumps and compressors.
  • With supervisory guidance, learns to install and perform preventive maintenance and repairs on heating, ventilating, air conditioning, pumps and compressor equipment.  Maintains, rebuilds, and repairs worn or defective parts, lubricating motors and bearings, changing belts and filters, replacing damaged insulation.  Responsible for cleanliness of mechanical rooms.
  • With supervisory guidance, learns to maintain necessary records and prepares requested reports in connection with the apprenticeship.
  • With supervisory guidance, learns to maintain assigned tools, equipment, and working areas in clean, neat, and orderly condition; uses prescribed safety equipment and follows safety rules.
  • With supervisory guidance, learns to perform minor plumbing, heating and electrical-related work not requiring a license.
  • With supervisory guidance, learns to perform related duties such as replacing bearings, belts, couplers, drain views, lubricating, greasing, etc. Erects ladders and scaffolding as needed to perform assigned work.With supervisory guidance, interprets and/or sketches layouts of work; estimates length of time, quantities of materials and labor need to complete jobs.
  • Operates motor vehicle, on and off campus, as assigned.
  • Responds to routine maintenance and emergency calls.
  • Assists with reclaiming of refrigerant units.
  • Practices and promotes excellent customer service in the work place, and exhibits a clear commitment to the diverse needs of customers.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)

  • Currently employed in good standing as Maintainer I in Facilities & Campus Services
  • Must be willing to complete an annual pulmonary function physical test, if required.
  • A valid Massachusetts Class D Driver’s License.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instruction.
  • Ability to establish and maintain harmonious working relationships with others, to work as a team, and to interact with others with tact and respect.
  • Mechanical aptitude and manual dexterity.
  • With training, ability to learn and apply principles and techniques of HVAC.
  • With training, ability to climb equipment such as ladders, scaffolding, and rigging.
  • With training, ability to read and interpret plans, blueprints and drawings.
  • With training, ability to use hand-held power tools and skill in using hand-held tools.
  • With training, ability to read, interpret, and apply standards and guidelines governing assigned unit activities.
  • With training, ability to work in confined spaces.
  • Physical stamina and endurance, ability to stand for prolonged periods of time; lift and carry heavy objects.
  • Work overtime on an as needed basis.
  • Knowledge of basic arithmetic.


 Physical Demands/Working Conditions

  • With training, ability to work in confined spaces.

Additional Details

  • By the end of the Apprenticeship cycle (stages I – III), Apprentice will be able to meet all the minimum qualifications of the then current Form 30 for the Maintenance Technician II (HVAC, Pumps & Compressors).
  • This apprentice position will work on the first shift and take required HVAC classes on one’s own time.
  • This is a maintenance function which includes overtime, returning to work between shifts when directed or called.
  • It is your responsibility to update the service desk with your current phone number.


Work Schedule

  • Mon-Fri 7AM- 3PM Work overtime on an as needed basis.


Salary Information

Grade 11
