Job Summary

The Research Centers & Seed Funding Program Manager for the Institute for Applied Life Sciences (IALS) oversees and coordinates two major areas of the IALS Operation: (1) Centers within IALS, (2) IALS Internal Funding and Seed Grant Mechanisms, including the Manning/IALS Innovation Awards and Core Facility Funding Vehicles, as well as IALS Special Projects as needed. This position reports directly to the IALS Finance & Operations Director and will work closely with the Director of IALS, Center Leadership, the Director of Core Facilities, and IALS Venture Development.  

 

Essential Functions

IALS Center Operations

  • Works with Center Faculty Leadership and the IALS Director to develop and implement Center objectives and strategic goals in order to build and contribute to a translational research culture at UMass by developing, implementing, and aggregating metrics of success, helping to create and administer new programs, and helping to identify key alignment areas between IALS strategic goals and the UMass campus strategic plan.  
  • Oversees the coordination of Center Research Themes, theme-related, and other center-related activities by providing administrative support and organizing and planning Center-related seminars and events.  
  • Works in collaboration with IALS Finance & Operations Director to accurately develop, update, forecast, and communicate Center budgets and manage center-related finances, utilizing University A&F systems (Summit, PeopleSoft, etc.).  
  • Manages faculty membership in IALS, including application and approval process, membership benefits, and all other associated duties.  

IALS Seed Funding and Manning/IALS Innovation Awards 

  • Coordinates the Manning/IALS Innovation Awards through the entire pre-award and post-award processes, including project management, student supervision and guidance, marketing, financial tracking, evaluation, and communication. 
  • Coordinates the IALS Midigrants process through the advertisement, collection and review, and tracking of applications, as well as the communication and disbursal of funds once awarded.

 

Other Functions 

  • Provides project management and administrative oversight for select special projects and new IALS programs, particularly at early, developmental, or launch phase as assigned by the Director of IALS. 
  • Supervises ~5 students (up to 2 undergraduate work-study students, and/or up to 4 MBA Fellows). 
  • Performs other duties as assigned. 
 

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure) 

  • Bachelor's degree plus two (2) years' program administration or related experience or any combination of education and relevant experience totaling six (6) years. 
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills. 
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, Power Point, OneDrive, MS Teams) and Adobe Creative Suite (Acrobat), including intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Excel. 
  • Familiar with online platforms for collaborative work.         
  • Ability to work accurately with many forms of data and generate relevant reports when necessary. Demonstrated attention to detail. 
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and judgment. 
  • Project management, team leadership skills, and ability to identify areas for process improvement. 
  • Ability to communicate and coordinate with other University departments (including stakeholders at all levels, and especially staff and faculty) effectively. 
  • Exceptional organizational and analytical skills.       
  • Experience and/or knowledge of fiscal management, including project monitoring and compliance, and demonstrated ability to learn and understand new financial concepts.       
 

Preferred Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure) 

  • Familiarity with UMass Amherst financial systems (PeopleSoft, Summit). 
  • Familiarity with basic aspects of life science areas. 
  • Familiarity with basic aspects of commercialization / venture development. 
 

Work Schedule

  • 37.5 hours/week, Monday through Friday.
  • May be required to work some nights and/or weekends.
  • This position has the opportunity for a hybrid work schedule, which is defined by the University as an arrangement where an employee’s work is regularly performed at a location other than the campus workspace for a portion of the week. As this position falls within the Professional Staff Union, it is subject to the terms and conditions of the Professional Staff Union collective bargaining agreement.
