Job Summary

The Research Proposal Developer serves as a critical resource for faculty and staff across Schools, Colleges, Centers, and Institutes. This role provides leadership, guidance, and expertise to support all aspects of proposal development for securing funding from federal and non-federal sponsoring agencies. The Developer ensures timely, high-quality, and coordinated proposal support services to enhance competitiveness and compliance.

 

Essential Functions

  • Collaborates with a diverse community of investigators and staff to facilitate efficient and timely proposal preparation, including budget development, progress reports, and grant renewals or modifications.
  • Analyzes and advises on funding opportunities; guides the preparation of realistic budget proposals and justifications; ensures compliance and competitiveness of proposals using tools like Kuali Research.
  • Provides expertise and support for multidisciplinary submissions, project development, and administrative approvals (e.g., Institutional Review Board, Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee, Conflict of Interest).
  • Acts as a liaison between investigators, their staff, and central research administrative services, proactively addressing pre-award or proposal-related concerns and identifying timely solutions.
  • Develops and delivers training and educational outreach programs tailored to investigators and research support staff.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)

  • Associate’s degree and three (3) years of experience in pre-award processes, research compliance, technology transfer, or a related area in academic, corporate, or government settings; equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered.
  • Commitment to obtaining Certified Research Administrator (CRA) certification as part of professional development.
  • Familiarity with federal regulations and policies (e.g., Uniform Guidance, Federal Acquisition Regulations, Cost Accounting Standards) relevant to sponsored programs or research activities.
  • Proven ability to analyze complex situations, balance service and compliance, and develop effective solutions.
  • Strong organizational and collaboration skills, ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, and capacity for self-direction.
  • Demonstrated integrity, discretion, and sound decision-making in professional settings.
  • Dedication to fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion through effective collaboration.
  • Proficiency in oral and written communication; intermediate experience with Excel and Word.

 

Preferred Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)

  • Bachelor’s degree and three (3) years of relevant experience in pre-award processes, research compliance, or related areas.
  • Certified Research Administrator (CRA) certification.
  • Expertise in interpreting and applying regulations related to sponsored programs.
  • Experience developing budgets and proposals that adhere to agency or institutional guidelines under tight deadlines.
  • Skill in translating programmatic needs into cost-effective budget proposals to optimize funding opportunities.

 

Physical Demands/Working Conditions

  • Typical office environment.
  • This position has the opportunity for a hybrid work schedule, which is defined by the University as an arrangement where an employee’s work is regularly performed at a location other than the campus workspace for a portion of the week. As this position falls within the Professional Staff Union, it is subject to the terms and conditions of the Professional Staff Union collective bargaining agreement.

 

Work Schedule

  • 37.5 hours per week, Monday through Friday.
  • Occasional evening or weekend work may be required.
