Essential Functions
The Department of Economics at the University of Massachusetts Amherst invites applications for an Assistant Professor appointment expected to start on September 1, 2027.
Preference will be given to innovative analytical methods, both empirical and theoretical, in a core area such as microeconomics, industrial organization, international trade and finance, and economic history, although economists in all fields are encouraged to apply. UMass Economics has a history and commitment to fostering a wide range of alternative perspectives and rigorous analytic methods for addressing economic challenges in innovative ways.
The teaching load is 2/2. Candidates will be judged on their scholarly research, as well as high quality and enthusiastic teaching. A completed Ph.D. in Economics or a closely related field is required by time of appointment. Current or previous external funding, or experience seeking external grants, is a plus.
Under exceptional circumstances, highly qualified candidates at other ranks may receive consideration.

A Ph.D. in Economics, or a closely related field by the start date of the appointment. Candidates will be judged on their scholarly research, as well as high quality and enthusiastic teaching.
Additional Details
The Economics faculty members at UMass Amherst work in diverse areas, from heterodox economics, such as Marxian, Post-Keynesian, Neo-Ricardian, Institutionalist, feminist, and stratification economics, to mainstream approaches such as applied microeconomics, economics and philosophy, and general equilibrium theory. The faculty studies economic theory and applied economics related to multiple dimensions of human well-being and social welfare; how economic opportunities are generated and distributed in society; the interplay between power and institutions and between economic behavior and the performance of the economy; and the importance of race, class, and gender. The Department is committed to fostering a diverse faculty, student body, and curriculum.
This position is subject to final budgetary and administrative approval.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in a standard office or indoor university environment and involves minimal physical exertion.

This position is expected to start on 9/1/27.
Salary Information
The University of Massachusetts Amherst expects to pay within an approximate range between $79,350 and $168,797 for this position. Please note:
The low-end of the pay range in all faculty searches at the University of Massachusetts Amherst is the minimum salary for the rank included in the collective bargaining agreement between the University and the Massachusetts Society of Professors, UMass Amherst/MTA/NEA.
The high-end of the pay range reflects an increase above the median of salaries at this rank within the department for faculty who may have multiple years of faculty experience. The specific pay for this position will be determined by the University based on consideration of all relevant factors, including faculty rank and required relevant certifications, when and if it decides to extend an offer of employment.
