Job Summary

Performs all of the laboratory tests in one or more departments of the clinical laboratory, demonstrating ability to perform with a minimum of supervision. Maintains records of procedures, quality control and performance of equipment.  Communicates results and related information to physicians and other health professionals. Has appropriate technical background to review results critically. Works under the general supervision of the Lab Manager who assigns duties, issues directives and checks on performance. Works under the direct supervision of the section supervisor who assigns duties and checks on performance.

 

Essential Functions

  • Performs routine and complex procedures in hematology exercising independent judgement.
  • Performs simple and complex clinical chemistry procedures.
  • Performs simple and complex procedures in clinical microbiology and parasitology.
  • Performs routine urinalysis.
  • Performs clinical procedures in spinal fluid analysis, examination of body fluids and semen analysis.
  • Prepares reagents, media and solutions necessary in the performance of specific laboratory procedures.
  • Participates in external and internal quality control programs.
  • Performs phlebotomy on patients.
  • Prepares written reports of tests performed.
  • Performs tasks necessary to the maintenance of a hygienic and safe work environment.
  • May supervise a laboratory section during the absence of the regular supervisor.
  • Participates in the laboratory call-back system.
  • Assists in training other technologists and technicians in laboratory procedures as required.
  • Accepts assignments in other areas of the laboratory whenever necessary and performs whatever duties are essential to the continued functioning of the laboratory.

 

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)

  1. Baccalaureate or advanced degree in a related scientific discipline with a minimum of one (1)n year experience in a clinical laboratory OR Associates degree in a laboratory science, or medical technology from an accredited institution.
  2. MT (ASCP) or equivalent OR MLT (ASCP) or equivalent
  3. Demonstrated ability in carefully organized and methodical laboratory practice.
  4. Ability to work harmoniously and effectively with other members of the laboratory staff.
  5. Must have adequate vision (corrected) to detect and report details in microscopy and test procedures and must be able to distinguish colors and hues.
  6. Sufficient manual coordination and skill to perform delicate laboratory tests.
  7. Ability to communicate information accurately and effectively to the medical staff and other members of the medical profession.
  8. Understanding of the need for strict confidentiality of all information related to patient care and the ability to observe practices assuring this confidentiality.

 

Physical Demands/Working Conditions

Typical clinical laboratory activity, including carrying, pulling/pushing, standing, reaching and sitting.

 

Work Schedule

  • Per diem; occasional weekend/holiday coverage.
  • This is a temporary, non-benefited position.

 

Salary Information

  •  $23.00 per hour
