Job Summary

Serve as a technical advisor and mentor to the new Campus Fire Marshal, sharing institutional knowledge and best practices.

 

Essential Functions

Provide guidance on fire safety and state building codes, inspection protocols, plan reviews, and campus specific policies.

Help develop and maintain the University’s Confined Space Rescue program, including written plans, procedures, risks assessments and equipment.

Assist with training development and delivery for personnel involved in the Confined Space Rescue Program.

Serve as a member of the Confined Space Rescue Team, including participating in assigned shifts for coverage.

Support continuous improvement by contributing to debriefings, incident evaluations, and equipment evaluations.

Maintain active certification and physical readiness to perform technical rescue operations.

Participate in routine training exercises and drills to ensure Confined Space Rescue Team readiness and compliance.

 

Other Functions

Performs other duties as assigned.

 

Minimum Qualifications

A Bachelor's degree in fire science, engineering or related field and four years of experience or Associate’s degree in fire science, engineering or related field and six years of experience.

Directly applicable work experience in application of Massachusetts Building and Fire codes. Thorough understanding of fire protection systems and necessary elements of a strong fire prevention program.
Proficient in the use of technology and Microsoft Office products.

Ability to develop cooperative working relationships within the campus community and with outside entities such as local fire departments, Building Officials, and the State Fire Marshal.

Valid driver's license and ability to pass a baseline physical exam.

Pass background and security check to allow access to sensitive and confidential information.
Night and weekend hours required.

Ability to work cooperatively with peers, taking a leading role on projects. Demonstrated negotiation and consensus building skills required.

A demonstrated ability to work effectively, in a highly organized manner, paying close attention to detail; accountability and reliability in meeting project deadlines and requirements.

Able to conduct trainings and communicate complex topics with non-subject matter experts. Able to share expertise and train individuals in a constructive and approachable manner.

Ability to work in a team-oriented environment in a collaborate approach to continued development and enhancement of the emergency management and business continuity program.

Able to function with minimal oversight to achieve established goals and objectives.

Enthusiastic work ethic and excellent interpersonal skills. Ability to develop cooperative working relationships with the campus community. Demonstrated ability to educate others in safe work practices.

Excellent management skills necessary to supervise, train, and evaluate staff and students assigned to the program area.

 

Working Conditions

Work is performed in indoor and/or outdoor environments, and requires frequent lifting, bending, tool use or equipment use. May involve work in confined spaces or at heights.

 

Work Schedule and Work Arrangement

Variable Schedule: Provides these services primarily on weekdays but may have weekend shifts.

 

Salary Information

UMass Amherst expects to pay within an approximate range between $40.00/hr and $47.50/hr for this position.
